Project Overview: Designed a comprehensive taxonomy tracing system for a large manufacturer to improve data governance and compliance.

Problem: Large manufacturer had dozens of taxonomies that were being ingested across multiple departments and systems, leading to errors and compliance risks. The client required a process to comprehensively account for all their taxonomies and to trace the origins and dependencies for each. Lastly, they required this information in a format they could use to build a web portal for taxonomy users to navigate.
Solution: Developed a taxonomy tracing system that mapped all taxonomies and their dependencies, providing a comprehensive view of the taxonomy landscape. This system was originally maintained in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Visualizations were created, semi-automatically, from the data using Microsoft Visio.
Outcomes: Delivered taxonomy tracing spreadsheet, updated visual diagrams, and documentation on maintaining and updating the taxonomy tracing spreadsheet and diagrams and a technical model for web portal implementation. The client was able to use the taxonomy tracing project to immediately prune redundant and unecessary taxonomies, which reduced internal operations costs. The client identified more opportunities for consolidation.
